How do the media cover established companies’ adoption of discontinuous innovations?
Together with researchers from the University of Passau, Prof. Dr. Graf-Vlachy publishes an article in the Journal of Product Innovation Management. In their article, “The Innovator's Media Dilemma: How Journalists Cover Incumbents' Adoption of Discontinuous Technologies,” the authors examine how the media report when established companies use discontinuous innovations in new products. Using the innovations of electromobility and digital photography, they show that the media systematically pay more attention to products based on discontinuous innovations compared to products based on continuous innovations. However, this increased coverage is also more polarized in terms of how favorably the products are evaluated. These characteristics of media coverage have important implications for companies' innovation strategies.
